Fuel poverty households rise by one million

New government figures just released show that the number of homes in the UK that are in "fuel poverty" has risen by one million to 5.5 million. That is 22%, or over one in five households, says the Department of Energy and Climate Change.

Households in fuel poverty are defined as spending more than 10% of their overall income on their fuel and energy bills. The rise in the number of homes in the category has been caused by the huge rises in gas and electricity prices over the last few years.

Electricity prices have risen 75% between 2004 and 2009, and gas prices have risen 122%.

UK homes are some of the most expensive to heat, mainly due to poor design in older houses, single glazed windows and lack of proper loft insulation.

With the recent price rises announced by British Gas and Scottish Power, the number of homes in fuel poverty is set to rise further, perhaps peaking at 6.4 million - that affects over 12 million UK residents.
