Government confirms sites for new nuclear power stations

The government has confirmed plans to build eight new nuclear power stations in the UK, to meet the energy requirements of the United Kingdom.

All the plants are on sites next to existing nuclear power plants, and are expected to be built by 2025. The sites earmarked are:

  • Bradwell in Essex
  • Hartlepool
  • Heysham, Lancashire
  • Hinkley Point, Somerset
  • Oldbury, Gloucestershire
  • Sellafield, Cumbria
  • Sizewell, Suffolk
  • Wylfa, Anglesey

Household demand for energy is set to rise over the next decade, and the government insists that nuclear power must form a significant proportion of our electricity generation capacity.

With stocks of North Sea gas dwindling, and renewable sources taking time to come online, nuclear power is a necessary evil. Still, it is going to take a long time to construct these plants, and in the meantime it is likely that the cost of energy to domestic consumers will continue to rise.
